Patras is the third largest city in Greece and one of the largest ports in the country. Patras port connecting Greece with the Ionian islands and cities of Italy. The city got its name from the Patrea, who settled there together with other Achaean in antiquity. After the liberation of Patras in late 1820, the city was rebuilt according to the architectural design of Stamatis Voulgaris. The roads were constructed along with squares and beautiful gardens. The city is divided in Upper and Lower Town. The Upper City retains the traditional style, with neoclassical and Venetian houses, stairs and paths. The Lower Town is more modern and bustling.
